I doubt many Singaporeans have actually thought about what the economy means to Singaporeans and the purpose of it. Most of us would agree (myself included ) that the economy is important and it is more important to put food in the fridge before we talk about freedom of speech, space or the ideals about human rights. But Singapore today has gone past all of these basic concerns and beyond ensuring our livelihood must lie a greater purpose than just surviving. It is my opinion that being Singaporean means much more. It's about resilience, independence , the history we've built since the 1960s. Above all its about the kampung spirit that galvanised us into a collective motion that laid the foundations of our success today. Sadly, we have completely lost sight of that.
